Shawano Graduation Preview

When Scott Zwirschitz, Shawano Community High School’s principal, was asked about a student in the Class of 2014 who overcame adversity, one student came to mind.

Haley Wilber underwent a liver transplant in March 2013 after a sudden diagnosis of Wilson’s disease, a genetic disorder that causes too much copper to be produced within the the liver.

Despite the ordeal, she was able to bounce back and will walk across the SCHS stage Friday with her fellow graduates.

“It took awhile to get back into the groove of it in the classroom. I was behind in classes,” Wilber said. “But the school was supportive in me getting back on track.”

Wilber, who spent her first two years of high school in Maryland, is grateful the school and community raced to the aid of a relative stranger.

“They reached out a lot and got to know me through it,” said Wilber, who plans to attend St. Norbert College in De Pere in the fall.

While she is uncertain of her major, Wilber knows she will be involved in the school’s multicultural services program.

“I lived in Maryland for most of my life, so I am used to different cultures,” said Wilber, a two-year member of the Culture Club at SCHS.

“We just do activities to get people involved in other cultures,” Wilber said.

Co-valedictorian Peyton Going will join Wilber at St. Norbert College.

Lindsey Kurtz, who shared valedictorian honors with Going, will attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Class president Courtney Baumann plans to pursue a double major in journalism and sports studies at the University of Iowa.
